This episode starts out with Yusuke climbing up a REALLY big hill, mountain, whatever. Anyways, Yusuke, being the type of person he is, grumbles about how Botan got him into doing this on a three-day weekend. *Flashback* Botan tells Yusuke about an aging psychic named Genkai who wants to give her power to an apprentice before she dies. An evil demon by the name of Rando, who has stolen the powers of ninety-nine other psychics, wants that power for himself and Yusuke is to stop him. Yusuke is reluctant to go, seeing as how he'll be missing out on a three-day weekend(even though he skips school a lot anyways -_-). Botan reveals that Yusuke will get a ticket to a match at Tokyo Dome once he completes the mission, and Yusuke agrees with excitement. *End Flashback* Yusuke grumbles some more, saying that if he screws up and Rando gets Genkai's power, there won't even be a Tokyo Dome, so at least the other way he wouldn't gotten a three-day weekend. -_-
Yusuke reaches the top of hill(or mountain) and discovers hundreds of people waiting outside Genkai's house, hut thingy. He's happy at this because that lowers the chances of him being picked apprentice instead of Rando, and then he can go home. Yusuke finds Kuwabara in the crowd, who is there to ask Genkai to turn the "volume" on his spirit awareness down, because he's having trouble sleeping because of it. Finally, Genkai comes out and says that their first test to become her apprentice is drawing lots. Everyone is confused by the test, but do it anyways. Yusuke and Kuwabara both draw red lots and move on. Kuwabara gripes about not wanting to become Genkai's apprentice; he's just there so he can get some sleep. Genkai thinks to herself that they turned the lots red themselves with their own spirit energy, just as two big guy who drew white lots step forward, demanding that she can't send them off with the draw of lots. Genkai uses her Spirit Wave technique to send them flying over the crowd, and now Yusuke is interested. He tries to use his demon compass to check whether or not Rando is there or not, and the compass explodes, because it got overloaded. Kuwabara looks over and says that it looks like Yusuke bought a crappy watch. ;)
Genkai leads everyone to the next room, which is filled with video games! o_O Everyone is once again confused, but Genkai explains. The punching machine is used to measure spirit power. The karaoke machine is used to measure the person's ability to improve their spirit power. And the Janken(rock-paper-scissors) game is used to measure spirit awareness. Kuwabara amazes the crowd at the punching machine, but then Yusuke steps up and gets even higher than him, pissing off Kuwabara. Genkai is now interested in both of them because of their scores. Not much else is shown of the other machines, except for Kuwabara doing Janken, Kazemaru doing karaoke(o_O), and Kibano doing the punching machine and getting a score even higher than Yusuke's.
Next, Genkai leads everyone who passed two out of the three machines outside to the edge of a forest. She points out a lone tree on a hill on the other side of the forest and explains that they have two hours to get through the forest and they are to meet at that tree. A couple of people get scared and run off, and then Genkai tells those remaining to start. Everyone charges into the forest, as does Genkai, who speeds WAY ahead of everyone else. Genkai had told them to use their spirit awareness to get through the forest, but Yusuke discredits her advice, thinking that everyone knows that the quickest route is in a straight line. Kuwabara, meanwhile goes off to the side on his own, clearly following Genkai's advice.
Yusuke, going straight through the forest, finds a group of bats hanging from the trees. That's nothing special, until a REALLY big bat named Baldok starts attacking Yusuke. Meanwhile, Kuwabara has reached the finish line. He's the first one there and proud of it. But within seconds, Kibano and Kazemaru show up, saying that they let themselves have too much fun in the forest. Back in the forest, Baldok continues to fly past Yusuke several times, who gets annoyed and begins beating him up. After giving Baldok a thorough beating, Yusuke grabs him by the head and yells at him for making him waste a half hour memorizing his attack strategy. Baldok apologizes, but that just pisses Yusuke off more, as he hates how Baldok talks in third person all the time.
Back at the tree, a total of seven people have showed up, Yusuke not among them. Genkai announces that time is up and those seven are the only ones that passed. Kuwabara tries to tell her that Yusuke should be coming, but Genkai says that there are no exceptions. Yusuke comes running up the hill, excited that he made it. Kuwabara yells at him because he was outside of the time limit. Yusuke swears, saying that even though he took the straight route, he didn't make it in time. Genkai looks at him in astonishment, as he would have had to encounter Baldok if he took the straight path, and Yusuke confirms that he beat Baldok's ass real good. Genkai decides that this once, she will make an exception. And now there are eight fighters left in Genkai's tournament, and one of them is the evil demon Rando is disguise....
