This episode starts off with Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama struggling against the dropping ceiling at the Gate of Betrayal. Yusuke suggests that Hiei, being the fastest, run out and flip the switch. Kuwabara doesn't trust Hiei, and Hiei questions Yusuke about trusting him. Yusuke says that Hiei is their only shot. Yusuke uses his spirit energy to help hold up the ceiling, while Hiei darts out from under the ceiling. Hiei runs up to the switch, but hesitates to flip it. The eyeball-creature tells Hiei that he should join up with the Saint Beasts, but Hiei slices it with his sword. Hiei flips the switch, and the eyeball-creature says that the boulder would've killed him anyways. Suddenly, a huge boulder drops down out of nowhere and seemingly falls on Hiei. Everyone else has got out from under the ceiling, and find Hiei standing on top of the boulder. Yusuke said that he knew Hiei would save them, although he did have Yusuke worried for a while. Hiei says that he saved them because he MIGHT need their help, and they continue on.
They come to a chamber and encounter the first Saint Beast. He is Genbu, the Stone Beast, and says that they're all going to die. Yusuke disagrees, and Kuwabara is shocked because Genbu is, in reality, a talking rock. Kurama says that he'll take this one, and Yusuke questions this move. Hiei asks Yusuke if he knew why he chose Kurama as his partner, and explains that it was to avoid fighting Kurama himself. Genbu sticks his tail into the ground and it comes out of the ground behind Kurama. Kurama dodges Genbu's tail. Kurama stands back as Genbu melts into the floor, and when Genbu comes out again, Kurama dodges his frontal attack, but when he turns he sees Genbu's tail coming at him from the other side. Kurama takes a hit to the stomach and Genbu tells him that he has no chance.
Kurama thinks otherwise, and pulls out a rose. Kuwabara wonders how Kurama's going to fight him with a flower, and Hiei laughs at Kuwabara's uninformed state. Hiei explains that Kurama is a demon that can control plants, and can do practically anything with them. Kurama turns the rose into a Rose Whip. Genbu melts into the ground again, and Kurama readies himself. Genbu leaps out, but Kurama knew where he was coming from and uses his Rose Whip to slice Genbu to pieces. Genbu wonders how Kurama knew where he was, and Kurama explains that after filling the room with the rose's sweet smell, Genbu's putrid one was easy to find. Kurama walks over to the others and Yusuke congratulates him. There is movement behind him, however, and Kurama realizes that his battle is not over.
Genbu puts himself back together, and says that Kurama can slice him up as much as he wants; he'll always come back together. Genbu also says that it makes an extremely useful weapon, and lunges himself at Kurama in pieces. As Kurama dodges the storm of rocks, he notices a small, blinking, red rock flying with the pieces of Genbu. Kurama doesn't fight back and gets pounded as Genbu comes back again, and Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Hiei wonder what he's doing. Genbu launches himself at Kurama again, and Kurama charges forward at him. Kurama gets hit with several pieces of Genbu before he grabs the red rock. When Genbu pieces himself back together, it doesn't work as planned and his anatomy end up in the wrong places. Genbu wonders what happened, and Kurama explains about the red rock being what Genbu's body uses to piece itself back together correctly. Kurama then destroys the red rock with his Rose Whip, and Genbu explodes. Kurama limps back to the others and Kuwabara says that he'll take the next one. Hiei notices Kurama's injury, and says that if Kurama is injured, then they're in trouble. Meanwhile, at the top of Maze Castle, the three remaining Saint Beasts say that they only kept Genbu around was because he could communicate with the town outside. Byakko, the White Tiger decides to be the next opponent, and he bares his claws....
