Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei must compete in the Dark Tournament, or else everyone they know will be killed. Yusuke found a fifth member for their team, who goes only by the "Masked Fighter." Kuwabara wonders how strong the Masked Fighter is, but his thoughts are soon interrupted. The preliminaries for the Dark Tournament will be held on board the boat, and an arena emerges from below the deck. Each team is to send out their strongest fighter, and it will be a battle royale between them all. The fighter who lives will get their team in the tournament. Kuwabara thinks that he will have no problem, but then gets freaked out by some demons. He goes over to Yusuke, who is fast asleep. Kurama tells Kuwabara to give Yusuke time to rest. Before they can decide who will go instead of Yusuke, the Masked Fighter steps into the ring for them. Kuwabara is worried, because if the Masked Fighter loses, then they won't be in the tournament. Hiei says that all they have to do is kill everyone on the boat before they reach the island, and they'll have no problem.
Back in Spirit World, an ogre asks Koenma who the Masked Fighter is. Surprisingly, Koenma doesn't have a clue, despite being the owner of the team. At Yusuke's apartment, Keiko and Shizuru are confronting Botan about the whereabouts of Yusuke and Kuwabara. Botan doesn't want to say at first, but when they threaten her, she gives in. Botan tells them that Yusuke and Kuwabara were forced into the Dark Tournament, and Keiko and Shizuru demand to be taken there.
Back on the boat, the demons in the arena decide to team up on the Masked Fighter, who is cornered. The demons charge at the Masked Fighter, who charges up some spirit energy in his hand and fires a Shotgun at the demons, killing them all. Kuwabara thinks that Yusuke must have taught the Masked Fighter his Shotgun technique. However, the demons who had their teams lose aren't nearly as thrilled as the members of Yusuke's team. The demons surrounded Team Urameshi, Hiei's idea of killing everyone on the boat seeming very appealing to them.
However, Kurama, Hiei, the Masked Fighter, and Kuwabara are up to the challenge. Kurama pulls out a new trick with his Rose Whip, the Rose Whip Thorn Wheel. Hiei attacks with his sword. Kuwabara uses his Spirit Sword, and the Masked Fighter easily takes demons out as well. One demon goes for Yusuke, who is still zonked out. However, once he's about to be hit, Yusuke jumps up and starts throwing punches. Kuwabara thinks that Yusuke's finally awake, but Kurama explains that he was just reliving his training in his dreams, and Yusuke slumps back down. Kuwabara has a thought that the Masked Fighter could be Genkai, but he dismisses it almost immediately.
Now that all the other demons on the boat are dead, Team Urameshi is undeniably in the tournament. Soon the boat arrives at Hanging Neck Island, home of the Dark Tournament. Team Urameshi checks in a fancy hotel, and are treated like kings there. Kuwabara, however, has a bad feeling about the people there. Also in the hotel, Toguro reports to Sakyo that Team Urameshi has survived the preliminaries. Sakyo is delighted and says that Team Urameshi will face Team Rokuyukai in the first match tomorrow. In Spirit World, Koenma decides to go to Hanging Neck Island to watch the Dark Tournament up close.
In Team Urameshi's room, they are served coffee, but Kuwabara suspects poison and pulls out a can of cola that he brought. The others don't care, especially Yusuke, who is still fast asleep. Soon after, Kurama notices that there is only one cup of coffee on the table. Kuwabara says that that's because he didn't drink his, but Kurama explains that there should also be one for Yusuke. Behind one of the couches is a little boy by the name of Rinku, who is drinking Yusuke's coffee (or Kuwabara's, and thus Yusuke's is on the table, whichever you prefer). Kuwabara thinks that the kid must have been in the room before they got there, but Rinku says that he came in after they did. Team Urameshi is a bit spooked, because they didn't even notice.
Rinku explains that he is on the Rokuyukai Team, who Team Urameshi is facing the next day. Rinku says that they will all die soon. His Team Leader, Zeru, appears, and tells Rinku to be quiet. Zeru tells Team Urameshi that they resemble the coffee cup on the table, and Zeru turns away. Suddenly, the cup is sliced in two from nothing. Hiei is annoyed by Zeru, and Kurama comments that the cut Zeru made in the cup is perfect. In the hall, Rinku mentions that Yusuke didn't move at all. Zeru finds this very mysterious.
The next day, the Dark Tournament is set to begin. The first round: Team Rokuyukai versus the guest team, Team Urameshi.
