Episode 54 - The Beginning of the End

Kuwabara is poking the Trial Sword with a stick from a safe distance, heeding Suzuka's warning about it. Eventually, Kuwabara decides not to be a sissy and he picks up the Trial Sword and charges his spirit energy into it. Kuwabara is amazed at the result, and rushes off to the hotel to show Yusuke. However, Yusuke is not at the hotel. Kuwabara sees a blue glow coming from the beach and goes toward it. It turns out to be Yusuke, who is surrounded in a large blue aura of spirit energy. Kuwabara falls down the cliff to the beach, catching the attention of Yusuke, who turns around and asks Kuwabara if he forgot how to walk. Kuwabara just stares at Yusuke, wondering how he got so powerful, and thinking back to earlier, when Yusuke fired his gigantic Spirit Gun into the sky. Kuwabara continues to stare, which annoys Yusuke. Kuwabara finally speaks, telling Yusuke that he has the most powerful sword in the world. Hiei appears, telling Kuwabara to shut up. Kuwabara notices Hiei's arm and is grossed out, as it is covered in blood. Hiei states that It wouldn't obey when he gave it a specific command, so he had to beat it up a little. This just freaks Kuwabara out even more, and asks where Kurama is. Kurama, who has been standing next to Kuwabara for some time now, announces just that. With the four of them there, Kuwabara says that they just need the old lady, referring to Genkai. Nobody says anything, and Kuwabara asks if anyone has seen her. Yusuke simply says that Genkai won't be joining them, because she's sick. Yusuke didn't want to admit to his team that Genkai was dead, because that would be accepting that she was gone for good, and that was something that he did not want to do.

The next morning, everyone feels a huge burden on their shoulders as they walk toward the stadium. They had come this far, and there was no turning back; no more second chances; this was the beginning of the end. Meanwhile, Koenma tells a teary-eyed Botan that she should stop weeping over Genkai's death; she came there knowing that she would face Toguro again and that she would die; crying won't bring her back. Jorge says to Koenma that its time to go, and Koenma says that he must leave, because he has some work to get to. Botan is surprised by this. "Why, its practically unheard of for Koenma to work. I wonder if he's feeling a bit under the weather...."

Meanwhile at the stadium, Team Urameshi is waiting in the bunker just outside of the arena. Kurama asks Yusuke if he's arranged for a replacement for Genkai. Yusuke replies that he has, and that "the little twerp shoulda been here by now." Kuwabara's annoyed that Genkai gets to sit out, and lists off a ridiculous method for curing any kind of sickness. Hiei asks him what its like being in a constant haze of stupidity, but just then part of the ceiling begins to crumble from the roar of the crowd outside.

In the arena, Juri announces that its time to begin the Finals. Juri announces Team Urameshi's name, and the gate opens, revealing Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, who all march out to a roar of boos. Juri then announces Team Toguro, whose gate also opens. Out walks the Toguro Brothers, followed by Bui and Karasu. However each team only has four members, and since neither have used a substitute, each team must have five members to commence in the Finals.

Outside the stadium, the girls, Botan, Keiko, Shizuru, and Yukina are out of luck because they don't have any tickets. They are spotted the by the Scalper who tried to sell Koenma tickets earlier in the Tournament, who now tries to sell them tickets, but Shizuru snatches them out of his hand. The Scalper demands his tickets back, but Botan has written each of their names on the tickets, so now the Scalper is out of luck, and the girls continue into the stadium.

In the stadium, Toguro says that the fifth team member will be no problem, as their reserve team member is always ready to join them when necessary. To the audience's surprise, Sakyo steps out and announces that he will be the fifth member of the Toguro Team. The demons in the audience question whether or not Sakyo can fight, but Sakyo says that he has no intention of fighting. He adds that his presence will allow Toguro to continue, and the only thing in it for him is a better view. Sakyo says that he will stake his life on Toguro's team winning before his turn comes up. Juri turns to Team Urameshi, who are still one fighter short. Kuwabara takes this moment to prove his stupidity. "That fighter that you got to replace Genkai, well, you should know that imaginary friends don't count." Yusuke tells him that he probably shouldn't talk for the rest of the Tournament. Juri gets impatient and begins to declare Team Urameshi unfit to compete, when suddenly, Team Urameshi's gate opens again, and a huge cloud of mist comes out. Kuwabara once again proves his stupidity by saying that this fighter can produce his own magical smoke. The mist begins to clear, revealing a teenage Koenma, saying that he just thought dry ice would be a nice touch. Kuwabara is shocked, as he is used to Koenma only rising up to his knee. Kuwabara then says that they don't even know if he can fight. Just like Sakyo, Koenma says that he has no intention of fighting, and he's doing this as a favor, because Genkai was a friend, and Toguro is a jerk.

Finally, both teams are set and ready to commence in the Finals of the Dark Tournament. Karasu steps into the ring for Team Toguro, and Kuwabara calls him a vampire-wannabe, and that he'll take him out quick. However, Kurama says that he will handle him and steps into the ring for Team Urameshi. Now, the first round of the Finals is set to begin, with Kurama facing his new rival....
