Episode 59 - The Shadow of Elder Toguro

The episode begins with Yusuke commenting on Hiei's destruction of half of the stadium, and says that Hiei didn't say how long he'd have to "hibernate," so maybe when Hiei wakes up they'll all be dead. Koenma tells him that he has wishful thinking. Yusuke then wonders what they're gonna do with the ring, because its basically destroyed as well. Kuwabara tells him just to concentrate on beating the Toguro Brothers, when the Elder Toguro gives him an intimidating look. Yusuke tells Kuwabara to ignore the Elder Toguro. Koto announces that there will be a long intermission while the replacement ring is brought in, and Kuwabara announces that he's going to the locker room to "get into his fighting groove." The Elder Toguro appears behind him and tells him that the real reason he's fleeing to the locker room is because Kuwabara's realized that he's about to die. This angers Kuwabara, and the Elder Toguro walks away laughing.

In the locker room, Koenma comments that Kuwabara's starting to look as pale as his outfit, and Kuwabara offers Koenma the chance to fight the Elder Toguro. Koenma once again reveals his jet pack, and Kuwabara is hoping that Genkai will be ready to fight once the intermission is over. Yusuke tells Kuwabara to give it up, and that Genkai's not going to fight today. The girls come in and have a short conversation, which is cut short by thunderous footsteps from the main arena. Everyone rushes out, except for Hiei, who is still incapacitated. They see the Younger Toguro carrying the ring from the old stadium on his back. Everyone is in shock, and Kuwabara gets more nervous about fighting the Elder Toguro.

Later in the locker room, Hiei finally wakes up and asks Kurama how long he was out for. Kurama tells him that he slept for six hours, and Hiei demands to know who won the tournament. Kurama says that nothing's changed, and that Yusuke and Kuwabara got bored and went for a walk. Hiei is confused, but Kurama explains that the ring was severely damaged from Hiei's fight, so Toguro brought the old ring from the other stadium in, and they should begin shortly. Sure enough, Koto announces on a speaker that they should start in thirty minutes, and Koenma, Kurama, and Hiei leave to join the rest of their team.

Back in the arena, Juri asks the crowd if they had a good break, and Kuwabara's disappointed that Genkai really didn't show up to fight instead of him. Hiei, who is walking towards him with Kurama and Koenma, tells him that he has to pull his own weight from now on. The Elder Toguro steps into the ring, and Koenma comments that Kuwabara is still pale, and wonders aloud if Kuwabara will bail on them. Kuwabara announces that he is a "real man" and is only leaving the ring if the Elder Toguro is beaten or he, Kuwabara, is dead.

Juri announces the start of the fight and Kuwabara immediately pulls out his Trial Sword and activates it with his spirit energy. A rainbow-colored blade the size of Kuwabara's regular Spirit Sword comes out of the hilt, and everyone is amazed. Kurama comments that the energy coming from Kuwabara's sword improves both his offense and defense, and allows him a shot at beating the Elder Toguro. Kuwabara charges the Elder Toguro, who states that Kuwabara's sword is powerful, and he should try not to slip. Kuwabara slashes down with his sword, cutting the Elder Toguro in two, but the Elder Toguro shows no sign of pain, or anything at all. Everyone is in shock, especially Kuwabara. The Elder Toguro doesn't move at all, and Juri begins to announces Kuwabara the winner of the match, until Kuwabara is suddenly impaled from behind, shocking everyone once again. Kuwabara falls to the ground and drops the Trial Sword, whose beam flickers away and dies, since it no longer has Kuwabara's spirit energy to feed it. The Elder Toguro reveals that he escaped under the ring and basically made a clone of himself with his hand. The Elder Toguro grabs Kuwabara's Trial Sword hilt and comments that it is a powerful weapon, and asks if he inherited it from "her."

Kuwabara doesn't understand what he means, and the Elder Toguro dances around the subject by saying that he would've thought something like that would go to her apprentice. Kuwabara deduces that he's talking about Genkai and says that she's just sick. The Elder Toguro comments that Kuwabara's friends have been keeping secrets from him. He says that Genkai is dead, and has been for two days. Kuwabara looks over at Yusuke, who looks down, signalling that Elder Toguro is telling the truth. Kuwabara is angry, and the Elder Toguro forms a model of a young Genkai with his hand by using his shapeshifting powers. He explains that Genkai and the Younger Toguro both had the dream of being the strongest fighter in the world, and they did everything together, so much that the Younger Toguro forgot about his brother. He says that they were even in love. The Elder Toguro's model of Genkai then becomes old, as he explains that Genkai grew old, while Toguro used his wish to keep his youth. He then says that Genkai was jealous of Toguro and fought him, but she was weak and he was happy to kill her. Yusuke shouts out that what the Elder Toguro said is a bunch of crap, and that Genkai wasn't jealous of Toguro; he killed her because he couldn't have her.

Kuwabara is far beyond pissed right now. Kuwabara says that the Elder Toguro has no honor, and the Elder Toguro agrees with him, but adds that its a good thing that's not what the tournament is about. He forms his arm into a drill and stretches it towards Kuwabara, who stands perfectly still. The Elder Toguro can't pierce Kuwabara's skin, and Kurama comments that Kuwabara's strength and resolve must be closely related. Kuwabara, still pissed, shoots out darts of spirit energy at the Elder Toguro, who is ripped to pieces. The Elder Toguro lies on the floor of the ring in a bloody heap of body parts, and Kuwabara tells him that honor does matter to him. Kuwabara turns and walks away, while Juri starts the ten-count. Koto doesn't think that a ten-count is needed, but she is proved wrong when the Elder Toguro pieces himself back together and stands up again after the eighth count. Kuwabara turns toward the Elder Toguro, and comments that he's invincible. The Elder Toguro says that the only chance Kuwabara has of killing him lies in hitting the Elder Toguro's brain or heart, and he can move them anywhere in his body. He comments that its like searching for a needle in a haystack, except that the needle can move around. Kuwabara then gets even more angry, but Elder Toguro decides that now is the time for Kuwabara to die, and shoots his fingers around behind Kuwabara, impaling him in the back, and leaving us with a nice cliffhanger.
